When the Okinawan, American Karate Association was first started in 1961, it's intended name was to be the Okinawan American Karate Association (OAKA). Bill Blond the treasure at the time was given the task of getting the Charters, Letterhead, and Certificates made for the association. When he went to pick up his order, he discovered that the printing shop had made everything read American Okinawan Karate Association (AOKA) instead of Okinawan American Karate Association. The officers had a meeting and decide what to do. Because funds were low or none-existing in the treasure the officers on approval from Grand Master Tatsuo Shimabuku left the name (AOKA).
