Biography of Sensei Ken Morgan

 

Sensei Morgan was born in 1953 in Bath, New York.  The son of a United States Marine.  He moved from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to the Quantico Marine Base area in 1960 and graduated from Woodbridge Senior High School, Woodbridge, Virginia, in 1971.  He began formal karate training in Isshin Ryu Karate in 1969 under Gunnery Sergeant Donald F. Bohan at HQ Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.   Before beginning Shorin Ryu studies, in which he currently holds the rank of Go Dan under Sensei Tadashi Yamashita , he studied Isshin-Ryu Karate Do under Sensei Donald Bohan, Kyoshi Karl K.  Hovey and Sensei Lee Paul.  While in high school he served as President of Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and was awarded local, regional and state honors as DECA Student of the Year in 1971.  He has attended Old Dominion College, Northern Virginia Community College and Germanna Community College and is nationally recognized in the fields of sales and marketing for both product development and the design of specialized training programs.  He is also an NAUI Certified SCUBA Instructor and shares his interests in diving and Martial Arts with his two sons Matthew, who has achieved a Brown Belt in Okinawan Shorin Ryu, and Ryan, who received the rank of Sho Dan (1st Degree Black Belt) in 2004.

 

In addition to his initial Isshin Ryu training, he holds Dan ranks in Okinawan Kobudo, Goshin Jitsu, Kobayashi Shorin Ryu and Kensei Do-Ko-Kai.  He was awarded the Black Belt of the Year 1999 and 2000.  He was presented with the prestigious "Martial Achievement" award  during induction into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame in 2001 and will be recognized for over 35 years of contribution to the Martial Arts in January during his induction into the Action Martial Arts Hall of Honors.   

 

He is the creator and Webmaster for the Kaiyou Shin Kai Karate School website (web page: www.bushidospirit.com) which provides training and study materials for all students, memorializes school activities and promotes the Martial Arts to website visitors.  He was awarded Volunteer of the Year by the City of Virginia Beach for co-development and organization of the Volunteer Martial Arts Program for At-Risk Children in Virginia Beach.  He also served the community as coordinator of the Annual Naihanchi Cup Karate Tournament for the benefit of these children.  He is acknowledged nationally for his commitment to the need for recognition of the problem of missing and exploited children and for developing the only Martial Arts internet site directly linked to the National Center for Missing and Exploited children.  His Martial Arts performances have garnered awards in kumite and kata in tournaments throughout the Eastern Seaboard.  He has been an annual attendee of the Shenandoah Mountain Invitational Bushdo Retreat and recipient of the Bushido Spirit Award.

Sensei Morgan's Kai You Shin Kai Karate School is one of the largest supporters of the annual King George Open Karate Tournament, sponsored by Kyoshi Karl Hovey and he has accepted Kyoshi Hovey's invitation to be a guest instructor at his May 2008 training camp.  In addition his school is hosting  the upcoming "Beach Blast Open" (first annual) Karate Tournament in Virginia Beach February 22nd and 23rd 2008.
